Students can automatically enroll in the Certificate of News Literacy through their Athena account. Students do not need special permission to enroll in the certificate and can enroll at any time.
To declare the certificate, follow these steps:
- Log into Athena (if receiving an error message, see vLab guide for off-campus access)
- Select Student
- Select Student & Registration
4. Select My Programs
5. To add the certificate:

- Select Add Certificate
- Select “News Literacy” from the dropdown menu.
- Select Next, then Confirm
- The certificate will now appear under My Certificates.
Troubleshooting
If you are unable to enroll in the certificate, it may be because you have existing holds on your account. Please check with your academic advisor if you run into any issues with establishing the certificate.
